In this song we have a lot of issues being raised, primarily revolving around feelings of loneliness, trials, and asking some critical questions about God and life.
- What do you think The Fray is trying to communicate in ‘You Found Me’?
- Why is God portrayed as a person waiting on a corner?
- Do you think it’s O.K. to question God? Why or why not?
In the song from The Fray, it talks about in the midst of life and having a relationship with God in the midst of loneliness, suffering, and despair. In the book of Job, there are exactly the same issues.
Reflect on this: Where is God when bad things happen? Take some time to think about the times in your life when you have questioned or even doubted God.
Did you have more than one example? We all have times in our lives when we have doubted God's existence or questioned why something has happened to us or someone we love.
Remember the words of the chorus:
Lost and insecure, you found me, you found me
Lying on the floor, surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait? Where were you? Where were you?
Just a little late, you found me, you found me.
Why'd you have to wait, to find me, to find me?
- Do you think the singer has resolved his disappointment with God? Why or why not?
- Have you ever asked the same questions?
- Does God owe us an answer in the tough times? Why or why not?
- Is it possible that God is with us in our trials even though it doesn’t feel like it? Why or why not?
You may remember the book of Job: Job has it all - wealth, and a lot of descendents. Although, he is devout in his faith, his family is another story. He prays for them daily.
Read Job 1:13-22.
- If you were in Job's situation, would you wonder where God is? Why or why not?
- Where did Job find the strength to face his trials with such faith?
Job's friends told him the reason he had lost everything had to be because Job had sinned. They told him that God punishes us when we sin. Do you agree or disagree with Job's friends?
Read Job 31:35-37 - Job crys out stating his innocence and not deserving of all this suffering.
- How are Jobs' statements similar to the lyrics of "You Found Me"?
- Do you think Job is totally innocent? Why or why not?
- Is there a relationship between our sin and the trials we go through? Why or why not?
God does take the time to answer Job, basically telling Him that life is a lot more complicated than just ‘good times’ and ‘bad times’ - as well as painting a clear picture that He is in complete control even when it looks bad from our vantage point.
Read Job 42:1-6.
- What changed Job's attitude?
- How should becoming aware that there is a bigger picture and that God is in control impact our attitude in difficult times?
What might Job say to you when you are in a difficult time?
Always remember that God is in control of our life and we need to place our total trust in Him. He makes all things good.
