Why are we called to be prolife?

Today is one of the saddest days in our nation’s history. In 1973, our nation decided to make abortion legal. Since then, millions of children have been violently ripped from the safety of their mother’s womb. I know that some of you have gone to the March for Life today. This is a great way to stand up for your faith and belief in the sanctity of human life. But why do we believe this?

To explain this, we must look at what a human life is. The reason that Roe v Wade gave to justify abortion was that a child that could not survive outside the womb was not a person. Typically a child needs to have been in the womb about 5-6 months before they could survive outside of the womb if needed. So what our government was basically saying was that around the 5 month mark we suddenly have a human being. But I ask you, what was it before it was a person? Let’s break this down. Do you think it is possible for anything to transform into something else? Now setting aside the Eucharist, because that is a miracle that God performs, it is impossible for something to turn into something else. Example: will a dog ever turn into a cat? To my knowledge, this has never happened. So to apply this to a child: how can a non-living fetus turn into a living human being? It seems that nothing can transform into something that it is not. Especially if it is not living and then all of a sudden one day it starts to live. Let’s look further. There is a rule in philosophy: like creates like. For example, will a dog ever give birth to a cat? Again, this has never happened and I can say with 100% certainty that it never will happen. So let’s apply this to humans. If a human becomes pregnant, what naturally must they get pregnant with? Naturally it has to be a human being. Now, if something is not alive, it must be dead. But any pregnant woman can tell you, that the being inside of her is alive, it needs nourishment to grow. Let’s draw a conclusion now. If a woman has to have human child, and that human child has to start as a human because it can’t magically transform from not human to human, and that human being must be alive, what do we have here? By these conclusions, we have to have a human life at all points in the pregnancy.

The last thing in determining the human person is the soul. When does God give a person a soul? It has to be a conception. Conception is when the sperm and the egg meet and at that moment God gives the person a soul. We know this because it is naturally impossible for a person to live without their soul. If what we just stated was true, than at all times from conception the child must have a soul and be alive. At anytime, an abortion is killing a child. The terms that doctors give to the child in the womb are just stages of development. Zygote, embryo, fetus; these are just terms of development. They are the stages that come before: baby, toddler, adolescent, pre-teen, teenager, adult. These are just stages that are divided between in the womb and out of the womb. Because of these truths, we believe that children should be protected from abortion. These are just some of the arguments against the crime of abortion. The killing of anyone is a sin. Abortion is killing. I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly. (John 10:10)
